Here’s what I believe to be a slightly older pipe. It is one that I refurbished after having rescued it at an auction. The bowl was dirty but not badly caked and the stem was as good as it could be, with no marks or damage. The outside of the bowl got washed with a soapy cloth and then simply scraped out with a penknife. I opened the airway in the shank out to 4.5 mm. with a hand held drill. The stem was scrubbed out with cognac on a pipe cleaner and cleaned off with alcohol. After that, it got a turn on the buffer and hey presto! One very nice old Stanwell Royal Briar. As one can see, the bowl is beautifully rounded and this is a pleasure to hold. The grain came up nicely under the polishing process and the whole thing is simply delightful. It smokes very well. Amazing what one can do with a bit of elbow grease and determination.
I am making enquiries as to the age of this pipe, but I suspect 20 – 25 years. If anyone knows, then please don’t hesitate to comment.
