Iwan Ries is an excellent shop! I am on the West Coast in Southern California. I have purchased from IR many times, and will continue to do so. If I’m ever in Chicago, I plan to make a trip to the store in person. I’d love to browse their inventory in person rather than just in the internet.

Never having been to one of these events myself I must say that I hope your experience was not typical. It sounds like the trip was worth it in spite of the problems related to the contest and that a good time was had at any rate.

It is a beauty of a pipe, congratulations! I have a soft spot for panels anyway. I take it this is to become a “house pipe”. Dropping it on anything other than your lap or a plush carpet would be a crime.

What is the intended fodder for this piece of work? And how is the weight?

I haven’t actually weighed it yet, 120 grams? Not bad for a large pipe.
Beautifully balanced though. A real treat to smoke.

I have only one and it is one of my best smoking and I have about 30 and have been smoking for 50 years. I like Yenji with Latakia mixtures.

Thanks and welcome. Yenji (or Yenidji) is very spicey. I cannot say that I have ever smoked enough of it to form an opinion. After 50 years with the pipe, you must have some stories to tell..!

Excellent post! Glad to have found your site. I have a 309 that I dearly love, but as you stated in your post are great for when you have time to relax. I’ve been wanting to get a smaller pipe. The 303 looks to be my next purchase.

303’s turn up often on the Bay. You won’t regret having one.

As for the size of the pipe, I have no real preference. My pipes run the size range from larger Petersons to smaller Kaywoodies. (A couple of which I can’t even get my little finger into.) I consider my very mixed and modest collection to be divided into two basic catagories. I have “house” pipes which rarely venture outside my four walls, and “out & about” pipes which can easily be tucked into a pocket if I duck in somewhere for whatever.

We seem to have the same approach to house pipes and out pipes. I have pipes I take to work, into the garden or out with the dogs. I have others which never leave the safety of my living room. Nice to know, someone shares my eccentricities!
